Emotions Through Music

What is Emotions Through Music?

Emotions Through Music is a unit study of sorts, exploring emotions and feelings that can be conveyed through musical composition and song lyrics. Through almost 50 songs, listeners will explore topics that can be connected to emotions they may feel, reaching audiences of 12 and older (with discretion and caregiver preference). While this is a learning unit, writing is minimal and personal, meant to take the style of a reflective “doodle” journal. The learning is more internal and guided through pointing out and discussing lyrics found in the songs, or instrumental connections that convey the emotions the artist is trying to showcase.

What Are They Listening To?

I’ve designed a concert “set list” (shown below) to showcase the variety of artists and styles that will be featured. While adult language is minimal in these songs, there will be a footnote disclaimer for a few songs that include a word or two of profanity. It’s up to caregiver discretion, however, to choose what they feel is appropriate for their learner. You will notice the music choices span from 1970’s to present day, truly a variety of music styles, too!

You will find that these topics can center around mental health, as emotions can influence our mental and physical health as well. Because of the topics covered, I’ve included extra resources for creative expression through art and music therapies, should you or your learner be interested.

How are the topics structured?

After the Music Terms Crash Course, each main lesson will be structured with a “What Is It?” page that introduces the topic, and gives a bit of an overview. Then, each song will have it’s own dedicated page before wrapping up with a closing connection, creative ways to express or process the emotion, and fun facts about the artists featured. Below, you can view a whole lesson from the unit!
